A study conducted by the School of Planning and Architecture lists the Delhi airport as toughest to reach, compared to 60 other world cities, in terms of air connectivity, ground accessibility, reliability, and speed. Listed below are three reasons why a frequent flyer must assess which mode of transport creates more value for your time. 

1.Dubious Traffic Conditions 

The difference between travel time to the airport at maximum and minimum traffic is a whopping 145%. The distance between the city center and airport is 18km. Travel time at usual traffic is 31 minutes and at peak traffic is 76 minutes. We wonder if all the hours saved by flying is lost en route to the airport. 

2. Ineffective Public Transport

 Compare the difference in travel time from the city center to the airport using private cars, public buses, and the metro. A private car averages 70.92 minutes, a bus takes 117.4 minutes and via metro, it is 94.6 minutes. 

Frequent flyers would be well advised to keep this in mind when you decide the best way to travel to the airport. 

The difference between the travel time in a private car and the closest public transport is twenty minutes. Factors such as this lead more people to travel in private cars thereby compounding the problem.   

3. Deficient Infrastructure

A senior professor of transport and planning at SPA, Dr. Sewa Ram has noted that apart from investing in airport infrastructure, investment must go into the ground access transport system. The average speeds drop drastically towards the last 5km radius to the airport. 

In international cities such as London, New York, and Tokyo, the average speed is maintained at 40kmph, and in the final five kilometers to the airport, the speed is higher than 30kmph. In the Delhi airport, it reduces from 21kmph to 16kmph during the final stretch.
